7 Reasons Why You Should Buy Your Gear Online
With the recent news of First Lite switching to a direct-to-consumer sales model and launching their "LIVE: 2018 Pre-Order Launch" on March 28th, 2018, it's motivated us to write about why you should buy your gear online.
The most common objection we hear about online shopping is: "but I want to touch, smell or try on before I pull out my credit card." Let's break it down to 7 reasons why you should get over your old buying habits and get online:
1. Easy to Compare Products
There’s nothing more frustrating about brick-and-mortar stores than when you can’t find the size or model you’re after. Not only that, but you’re at the mercy of a sales associate for extra information and advice. When shopping online there is almost the opposite problem. There are a ton of resources available for model selection, sizing, first-hand-experience reviews and unbiased comparisons. These resources include YouTube, blogs, manufacturer websites, and forums.
2. More Privacy
No one likes to wander through a crowded retail store zigging and zagging around other customers to find the item they’re after. Once you’ve found what you have been searching for, you’ll likely end up feeling pressured by an employee, or rushed at the counter and end up making an impulse purchase. And where else can you shop in your underwear?
3. Greater Selection
Typically retailers will only purchase a small portion of a brand’s product line. This makes sense since they’re out to maximize profits; the consumer on the other hand, is left hopping from store to store figuring out who carries the model they are after. If you’re Canadian (like us!) you’ll be lucky if your local store even carries the brand you’ve been ogling on Instagram for months.
On the other hand, it’s a lot easier for stores online to offer wider offerings of each company (or directly from the company itself). In addition, the power of the internet can connect you to people selling used or discontinued items on Facebook Groups, eBay, and Craigslist.
4. Lower Prices
Many brands have started to adopt a consumer-direct model, including First Lite starting this year. What does that mean for you? That $300 jacket in Cabela’s will only cost you $150 direct from the brand’s website.
This isn’t the only pricing advantage online, even retailers will have online-only incentives for first time buyers, referral programs and free shipping offers. They might even offer price matching. It never hurts to reach out to customer service and ask!
We encourage you to sign up for the mailing lists and/or social accounts of each company to be alerted of the end of the season or Black Friday sales. Make sure these emails aren’t in your spam inbox! Companies such as Kuiu, Sitka, and First Lite will have sales up to 40% off about 3 times a year.
5. Save Time
Think about leaving your house to go purchase the new early season kit you’ve been researching for weeks. You’ll have to schedule a chunk of your day dedicated to battling traffic, finding a parking space, navigating a store, lining up to try on everything, then wait at the checkout before finally returning home. Oh, and make sure you show up when the store is open!
Compared to online you can shop 24/7, lineup free. Not only that it ships right to your door. There’s usually always ways to get free shipping. If you don’t want to wait the 3-7 business days you can almost always pay for expedited shipping.
Most sites are mobile friendly so you can finish your shopping on your phone, before even getting out of bed.
6. Better Return Policies
Fortunately, most online stores have return policies. The return policy lists the terms and conditions under which an item might be returned to the store. This gives you a piece of mind while shopping because you know you can always return the item if it doesn’t satisfy your needs.
7. Easy Gifting
Lastly, sending gifts to relatives and friends is easy, no matter where they are. Now, there is no need to make distance an excuse for not sending a gift on occasions like birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, and so forth. Amazon will even gift wrap and write a personalized message for you!
